Common Terms

Sometimes, we use a lot of acronyms and unusual terms in photography... here's some of them defined for you

Alphabetized of course

  • Bokeh - a term for the fuzzy area behind the subject - sometimes specifically bright light. Read the story of how the term got the H - another interesting story on how to make your own bokeh shapes
  • CC-hard hat constructive criticism
  • Chimping - looking at the LCD on a digital camera to check exposure/histogram etc.
  • CPL - Circular Polarizing Lens
  • DH/DS/DD-darling husband, son, daughter
  • DOF - Depth of Field
  • IS - Canon's term for image stabilization in some of their lenses
  • JSO-just starting out
  • OOB - out of bounds - examples and tutorial
  • OOF-out of focus
  • PB-portfolio building
  • Pixel Peeping - looking at an image at 100% to see the very fine details
  • PP-post processing
  • Rule of Thirds - a good explanation here
  • SOOC-Strait out of camera
  • TC - tele converter (also called an extension tube)
  • USM-un sharp mask
  • Vignette - dark shading around the outer edges of an image (usually circular)
